Album of problems and illegal activity encountered at Cantamar
Cantamar should not be in operation (and
may not legally be doing so...). The resort
is operated by a man who cares only for money,
which he makes illicitly on a dive boat he
doesn't even report the income for - income
on the order of $250,000USD per month! (most
of which goes to repairing everything around
here because nothing is maintained!) He launders
the money through the resort by showing booked
rooms that are never occupied. As a result,
he doesn't give a shit about the facilties,
the employees, or the clients, including
us. And the problem is, he is PROTECTED by
the state government of Baja California Sur,
which is the most corrupt in Mexico, so much
so that the government here DOES NOT FUNCTION,
except to the benefit of RICH FOREIGNERS.
This gives the owner free reign to take advantage
of us, harass us, threaten us, and use the
police to harass us.
We must document these problems because no
one here will do anything about it. We have
complained to every government agency and
even the Mexican Navy, and NO ONE has done
anything about the daily fuel spills, the
trashy conditions, the danger to tourists,
one of whom nearly lost his leg - a divemaster
nearly died in similar circumstances. In
fact, I saved the life of that divemaster
because Cantamar doesn't have training or
first-aid equipment, despite being a dive
center 30 minutes from the nearest hospital!
The worst of it is, this place DRIVES AWAY
TOURISTS! We have heard from a LOT of people
who have said they would never return to
Mexico after their experience at Cantamar.
And you know what, you should NOT come to
Mexico. This marina is the ONLY Mexican-owned
marina in La Paz, and it is a complete and
total dump.
Please also note that we have reported these
problems to Sea Shepherd, who work out of
La Paz. But, Sea Shepherd is like every other
NGO out there, they are corrupt, and only
operate to line the pockets of the executive
board, so Sea Shepherd will only do what
gets them attention, and only if attention
is already being paid to the problem. Sea
Shepherd works with Mac and Neil Shroyer,
the source of all corruption in Baja California
Sur!
Do you care that this place is destroying
the environment?
